This lecture will explore a number of themes around the interconnection between philosophy, theology and art, considering some of the metaphysical underpinnings of the sacred image. The discussion will focus on the theological and historical depths of the icon, and the contexts in which divine likeness is discussed in Neoplatonic and Christian Neoplatonic thought. Through the additional discussion of modern examples of spiritual art practices, the lecture will propose that the relation between image and likeness in the traditions discussed also illuminates questions on the proliferation of images in the digital age, and shows how certain works of art, and approaches to artistic practise, might point to the eternal in the transient.
